Mountain biking is bigger than ever, with more and more people getting in on the action. Thinking of giving it a try? Here’s some advice on how to stay safe and have fun.

Choose the right ride

There are tons of different mountain biking styles, like cross-country, enduro, downhill, and fat biking. And there are special bikes for each one. You need to pick a bike that’s designed for your preferred style, but that’s not all. There are all sorts of options to consider, including:

  • Wheel size
  • Type of pedals
  • Single or dual suspension
  • Suspension travel
  • Head-tube angle

It’s a good idea to talk to one of the experts at your local bike shop. They’ll help you find the perfect bike for your needs.

It’s also smart to rent a few different types of bikes and try them out before laying down your hard-earned cash. Who knows, you might even decide to go for an e-bike to help you get up those hills!

Bike maintenance

Cleaning

You’ll never bring home a clean bike from a good ride. And it’s important to get rid of any dust or mud to keep your bike running smoothly. Use brushes and rags to get rid of the grime, but be careful not to scrub down the suspension system or let any water get in. Simply wipe the front shocks from bottom to top and the back ones from top to bottom. And don’t forget to lubricate your chain.

Repairs

A good cleaning will allow you to inspect your bike properly. You may find damage or adjustments that need to be made. If you want to save money by doing them yourself, hit up a bike workshop to learn the basics. But don’t hesitate to get a qualified bike mechanic on the job—they’ll make sure your ride is as safe as possible.

Gear and insurance

Get geared up

Falls are always a risk with mountain biking. That’s why it’s important to have the right clothing and gear. You’ll need a helmet, goggles, elbow and knee pads, shoes, and gloves. Do your research to make sure you’ve got everything you need.

Get insured

Falls mean injuries. And injuries can mean unanticipated costs not covered by the public health system. Paramedical care is expensive, including things like chiropractic, physiotherapy, dental care, crutch rentals, and ambulance fees. The good news is that you can take out accident insurance to cover these costs. It’s inexpensive and pairs perfectly with public and group insurance. It also provides financial compensation for permanent injury or death. Take your time to shop around for coverage that fits your needs.

Insuring your bike

Mountain bikes aren’t cheap. So what happens if your bike or gear gets stolen? It’s actually covered by your home insurance. But it’s important to remember that most insurers only cover up to $2,000. Depending on the value of your bike, you may want additional coverage to insure its total value.

Did you know?

If you injure someone while mountain biking, you’re protected by the civil liability coverage included in your home insurance.
