How to protect yourself in an earthquake
Quebec is far from immune to seismic activity. Yet only 3% of Quebecers are ensured against earthquakes. And few people are aware of the key steps they can take to lessen the risk of injury and cover property damage if an earthquake strikes.
Every year, there are about 450 earthquakes in Eastern Canada. While most of them are not strong enough to cause property damage, an earthquake of up to 7 on the Richter scale could eventually strike in the seismic zone of the Quebec City–Montreal–Ottawa corridor, which extends to and includes the Charlevoix and Côte-Nord areas.
Steps to take to protect yourself from an earthquake
Although earthquakes of severe magnitude rarely occur in Quebec, it’s still important to know and follow the safety instructions in case one does strike.
- Have a family plan that clearly outlines the best course of action in case of an earthquake.
- Make sure your home emergency kit is well stocked.
- If the ground begins to shake:
- Drop down near the floor;
- Take cover under a table or sturdy piece of furniture;
- Hold on tight to the furniture.
Don’t go outside. Stay well away from doors and windows, as well as tall furniture and light fixtures. If you are outside, getting out of a crowd and seeking adequate shelter may save you from being trampled if there’s a panic.
- Once the shaking subsides, make sure no one is injured and that your home has not sustained severe damage, before inspecting the premises. If in doubt, it’s best to evacuate and contact the authorities. If the damage appears superficial, document it by taking photos, and contact your insurer without delay. At all times, keep your safety and that of your loved ones uppermost in mind.
Earthquake insurance: are you covered
Earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater can cause severe damage because they often affect the foundation and even the structure of a property, so it’s important to properly understand what coverage your home insurance contract entitles you to.
People don't know that you need to get an endorsement added to your home insurance policy to protect your property from the many consequences of an earthquake. The repercussions can range from minor damage to cracked foundations, or even the complete destruction of the building.
Here are a few points you should know:
- In the case of a fire following an earthquake, coverage is generally included in a home insurance policy.
- Damage from a landslide and/or rockfall resulting from an earthquake will be covered if you have added an earthquake coverage option.
- Damage caused by flooding will be excluded from coverage.
The rule also applies to your vehicle, which will be covered if you have added “Section B: Coverage for Damage to Insured Vehicles” to your policy. If you live in an earthquake-prone area, talk to your insurance agent, who can suggest the right coverage for your needs.
