Do you have an ant, mouse or raccoon problem that requires the services of an exterminator (pest management specialist)? As with any contract with a service company, compare at least three quotes in order to make an informed decision.

Any good exterminator must first take the time to identify the invasive species, identify the areas to be treated and offer you a complete extermination program. For example, it’s not enough to simply set traps to eliminate mice; the exterminator must also find and block the openings through which the critters entered.

Exterminator selection criteria and conditions

All exterminators must hold a pest management contractor’s permit, issued by the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, and Fight Against Climate Change.

Make sure this contractor entrusts the work to trained certified technicians. Anyone carrying out extermination work or, at the very least the person supervising them on the job, must hold a certificate from the ministry.

Also ensure that the pesticides used are products registered under the Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) and, most importantly, that they are meant for their intended use.

It’s preferable to choose a company that:

It should be noted that members of the AQGP, as well as the pest management companies approved by CAA-Quebec, are required to have such insurance.

A guarantee must also be included in the contract. This is a time-limited commitment to return to the location to carry out follow-ups or emergency treatments if the pest reappears. Be aware, however, that this guarantee cannot ensure that the problem will not reoccur: other visitors could choose to invade your land or house again.

Should I leave the house during the extermination work?

Leaving your property while the work is being carried out may be necessary both for your safety and for the success of the operation. The pest management specialist will make a recommendation, and of course, we suggest you follow it.

Also note that several measures require a follow-up; for example, the eggs and larvae of certain insects can survive an initial treatment.
