Soaking up the sun while relaxing on a beach is a pleasure that those who love summer can’t wait to indulge in. Here are some safety tips to keep dangers at bay and enjoy the outing to the fullest.

1) Opt for supervised beaches

There are many risks for swimmers who venture out of designated swimming areas. Seemingly calm waters can be rougher than expected, not to mention the undertow, which can pull you away from the shore. Be aware that Quebec law requires a ratio of one lifeguard for every 125 people.

2) Obey signs at the beach

Access to bathing areas is governed by a clear and easy-to-understand sign system. A red sign means it’s forbidden to go in the water, a yellow sign informs swimmers of potential risks and a green sign indicates free access to the water. Obeying the safety instructions is not a suggestion, it’s an obligation.

3) Think about designating a swimming buddy

The idea is simple: pair up with someone that you won’t go in the water without. This way, everyone will be able to count on a friend in case of a problem. This is an effective supervision tactic, especially during group outings.

4) Protect your feet

Wearing flip-flops will prevent you from stepping on a shell or a piece of coral or glass, which could send you straight to the emergency room. Make sure kids are wearing appropriate footwear when running around.

5) Protect yourself from the sun

Exposing yourself to the sun’s rays on a beach comes with risks, even when it’s cloudy. Purchase sunscreen with adequate protection and be sure to reapply it frequently, especially after swimming.

6) Go easy on the alcohol

Having a drink in the sun is one of life’s pleasures, but excessive drinking can have disastrous consequences when you’re at the beach. Make sure you stay in control, especially if you have to supervise children or plan on swimming.

7) Keep an eye on children and designate a play area

If multiple children will be with you at the beach, plan shifts for each adult to watch them and designate areas for play and swimming. Establishing safety boundaries will facilitate supervision.

8) Put safety wristbands on toddlers

Have small children wear safety wristbands designed to warn as soon as the wearer is immersed in water. It’s an effective gadget to prevent a tragedy and make sure you get there in time if you lose sight of your toddler.

9) Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Knowing the techniques to restore blood flow in a person in cardiac arrest can make all the difference in an emergency. By spending a few hours reviewing your first-aid knowledge, you could save a life!

10) Going abroad? Plan on travel insurance!

Whether you’re heading to the beaches of Old Orchard, Virginia or Florida or setting your sights on an international destination, travel insurance is a must to fully appreciate your stay without having to worry about astronomical medical costs that could be incurred following an accident. If you’re travelling with your family, be aware that CAA-Quebec Family Travel Insurance offers great family rebate for children and full-time students aged 24 and under.
