Planning an all-inclusive tropical vacation? You may be offered a wholesaler refund option from Transat, Sunwing, etc. by your travel agent or when you book online. It’s a good option, but it differs significantly from trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Find out more to make a smart choice!

Refund options: A cost-effective add-on

Inexpensive refund options offered by wholesalers cover the cost of the package in the event of cancellation—and that means before departure only. It allows you to buy a trip well in advance without having to worry. One of the advantages is that you can cancel or postpone your vacation for any reason. You don’t need any serious or unexpected reason that’s beyond your control to be eligible for a refund.

For example, say you’ve planned a trip, but the timing turns out to be less than ideal. Maybe you have big assignment at work and the trip would end up being more stress than rest. Or an aunt loses an extended battle with cancer just before you’re supposed to leave, her funeral is right in the middle of your trip, and you’d like to attend.

If you cancel, you can expect to receive a refund in the form of a credit. You’ll then have to choose another package from the same wholesaler. Plus there’s usually a 12-month window in which you must use your credit.

Travel insurance: Comprehensive and flexible

Travel insurance provides all the protection you need to leave with peace of mind. You simply choose the coverage you need. Your insurance can include the following:

Cancellation insurance will allow you to request reimbursement if you have to cancel your trip. It often comes with trip interruption coverage. That way, you’re covered before and during your stay. You will be reimbursed in cash if you have to cancel your trip or cut it short because of an unexpected event that’s out of your control, such as an accident, a sudden illness, or serious damage to your home.

If you want to protect the money you invested in your travel package, the refund option from the wholesaler is a good option. But trip cancellation and interruption insurance is sometimes more complete. And because it’s always a good idea to get travel insurance that covers emergency medical costs outside Quebec, add emergency medical care insurance for complete coverage. That way you’ll protect the trip and the travellers!
