How to make a skating rink in your yard?
(Text appearing on a series of images and video clips, such as someone shovelling, children skating and playing hockey, someone lacing up skates.)
Step 1: Find a good spot
Choose a spot that’s near a tap to simplify the ice-making.
Mark out the rink area.
Ideally, you’ll want a rink that’s:
8 ft x 16 ft for skating
16 ft x 40 ft for playing hockey
Leave 2 to 4 feet of clearance around the rink.
Step 2: Prepare the surface
Lay out a waterproofing membrane made of polyethylene on the ground and cover the edges with snow.
Add snow and level it with a lawn roller or a shovel until it’s about 4 inches thick.
Use a hose and an adjustable nozzle so that you can wet the surface evenly.
Step 3: Ice the surface
Spray widthwise in horizontal strips.
Let the ice freeze for 2 to 4 hours and then spray it again.
Spray as many times as you need to until you get ice that’s 6 cm to 10 cm thick.
Step 4: Look after your rink
Fill any holes with snow. Level the surface by spraying it a few times.
Let your insurer know. That way you’ll be covered if anything goes wrong.
