How to prepare your cottage for winter

1. Tour the building and look for any damage or defects. 

2. Inspect the roof and clean the gutters. 

3. Empty the pantry and unplug small appliances. 

4. Take all valuable objects with you. 

5. Store bedding in a dry place. 

6. Close the main water inlet and switch off the power to the artesian well pump. 

7. Drain the pipes and toilet tanks. 

8. Pour plumbing antifreeze into the pipes. 

9. Unplug and empty the tank. 

10. Air out the cottage and lower the thermostat to 8°C. 

Check with your insurer and your municipality before carrying out any work.
