10 ways to get your house ready for winter

(Text appearing successively over a series of images and video clips, such as a gutter filled with debris, a basement window surrounded by a coping, a person caulking a window.)

1. Check your roof for wear and tear and clear your gutters of any debris.

2. Inspect your foundation. Fill any cracks in the concrete to keep water from seeping in.

3. Clear window wells of any debris that could keep them from draining properly.

4. Inspect your siding. It needs to be in good shape and firmly attached to the building structure to withstand winter.

5. Check the seals on doors and windows. Fix or replace the weatherstripping as needed.

6. Remove window screens to prevent condensation.

7. Once the ground is frozen, winterize your garden and mow your lawn to 5cm.

8. Unscrew, empty, and put away garden hoses.

9. Remove temperature-sensitive items from your shed (paint, fertilizer, pesticides, cleaning products, etc.) and store them safely indoors.

10. Clean your BBQ and cover it or put it away. Store the propane tank outside but in a sheltered area.
