Soaring cost of gas: understanding prices, and how to save

Published on March 8, 2022

Motorists are seeing red at the pump as repeated increases push prices to record levels in every region of Quebec. It is a whole different situation than the start of the pandemic, when gas prices dropped below a dollar…

Gasoline prices have been under pressure for several weeks, increasing the financial burden of Quebecers. Since oil is a global commodity, similar trends are being observed elsewhere in Canada, the United States and around the world.

To offset increasing prices, we are proposing a few tips to save on gas, with the four main ways to do so today and in future available below.

First, though, the question everybody is asking…

Why are prices increasing?

Gas prices have shot up because of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, one of the world’s leading oil producers. It is impossible at this time to foresee how long this situation will last.

Because of the sharp increase in petroleum indicators, acquisition costs for gasoline retailers are going up, followed by higher prices at the pump. To compare the realistic price calculated by CAA-Quebec with the average pump price in your region, visit our Gasoline Watch page.

How can I save on gasoline?

1.    Practice eco-driving

How you drive can have a big impact on your vehicle’s gasoline consumption. Eco-driving techniques can translate into substantial savings when rigorously applied.

Here are a few examples:

  • Accelerate smoothly
  • Reduce your speed
  • Drive at constant speed
  • Keep your distance

2.    Think about alternatives

Do you really need to grab your car keys every time you go out? Have you thought about other means of transportation (biking, walking, etc.) or public transit? If offered by your employer, working from home is another solution that can considerably reduce your gas bill.

Planning and combining your shopping and errands can help reduce your time on the road, and avoid rush hour periods. Congestion is costly—in time, patience, and fuel costs.

3.    Good maintenance is important

A poorly maintained vehicle can increase fuel consumption by up to 25 percent. Need we say more? Now is the time to check your vehicle’s maintenance schedule and make an appointment if needed. The specialists at a CAA-Quebec recommended repair facility, your dealership or a trusted garage can quickly identify a specific problem or do a complete inspection.

4.    Consider going electric, hybrid, or changing model

Yes, it can be very difficult to find an all-electric or hybrid vehicle for immediate delivery. But remember, starting in 2035, the sale of new gas-only vehicles will be prohibited in Canada. This might be the right time to do your homework and start shopping for an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Still hesitant about going electric? Don’t worry, there are plenty of fuel-efficient vehicles out there. To better understand the cost of owning and operating a vehicle, see our driving costs calculator.
