Important questions to ask before buying a quad
The first thing to do when choosing an ATV is to take stock of your needs:
- Will you use your ATV to explore Quebec, work on your land or property, or go hunting or fishing?
- Are you looking for performance or comfort?
- What is your budget? Entry-level quads (400cc) cost about $7,500, but better equipped and more powerful models can easily run up to $15,000 or more. Buying a used quad is also an option.
Visit more than one store and explain what you’re after. You may want to consider renting an ATV for a short time. It’s a good way to try out the vehicle you’re interested in before you buy it. Keep in mind that small engines are easier to handle.
Follow ATV laws and regulations
A new law on off-road vehicles, passed in December 2020, states as follows:
- Off-road vehicles may not be operated on public roads, unless authorized by signs.
- The maximum speed for ATVs is 50 km/h unless otherwise stated.
- Effective September 10, 2021, any person wishing to operate an off-road vehicle on a trail, road, or public or private property must be at least 16 years of age, hold a valid driver’s licence, and have a certificate showing they completed the required training. Of course, ATVs must be registered.
Insure your quad—it’s the law!
By law, all ATV owners must have a minimum of $1 million in liability insurance. Many insurers suggest increasing the insurance to $2 million to cover all possibilities. This increase won’t make much difference to the premium, but it will save you a lot of headaches if something happens. Check with your agent to make sure you have enough coverage.
It’s also a good idea to get accident insurance because SAAQ (Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec) does not cover ATV accidents unless a moving car is involved. Accident insurance will give you peace of mind because it covers ambulance rides, hospital expenses, and even the cost of reworking your home if you have to make accommodations for your injury.
Make sure you have someone you can call if something goes wrong. Members with a CAA Plus® RV or CAA Premier® RV card get roadside assistance for their quad as well as their car.
Play it safe on and off the trails
Prevention is key when heading out on your quad:
- Learn how to handle your quad, including how to shift your weight on corners and steep hills. Lots of ATV clubs offer training—don’t hesitate to sign up for a class.
- Always turn on your headlights and taillights so you can see and be seen.
- Carry a first aid kit.
- Get a GPS tracker.
- Have a reliable means of communication for emergencies.
- Never go out on your own or, at the very least, tell someone when and where you are going.
Maintain your quad
We recommend you service your ATV regularly, including changing the motor oil and checking the air filter. Consult your owner’s manual.
You should also take your vehicle in for maintenance at least once a year if you use it in the winter or ride on sand or dusty tracks in the summer. CAA-Quebec’s list of Approved Auto Repair Service Locations includes shops that specialize in recreational vehicles. In addition to maintenance, these shops can also inspect any used ATV you’re planning to purchase.
Automotive Advisory Services can give you the address of a shop, offer advice, or estimate the value of a used quad.
Get the right gear for your new hobby
In addition to the cost of purchasing your quad, plan on spending about $1,000 on equipment. You’ll need:
- A certified helmet
- Appropriate footwear and gloves in case you fall
- Protective clothing
You can find all of these items at dealerships and specialty motorsports stores. Or you can keep an eye on the classifieds for a good deal!
