Home and pet insurance: what types of damage are covered?
Generally speaking, home insurance covers damage caused by your pet, whether it’s a breakage or an injury. However, there are some specifics to be aware of. Find out the answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Will my home insurance cover me if my pet injures someone or causes damage at their home?
An essential part of your home insurance policy, third-party liability covers property damage or bodily injury caused to third parties by you, your family members or your pets.
What if your companion causes damage to other people’s property, for example by scratching or biting furniture? Your home insurance may cover repair or replacement costs.
Someone injured by your pet files a lawsuit against you? Your insurer will handle your defence. If the court rules you are responsible, the insurer will pay the requested compensation.
And what if your pet injures another? Your civil liability also comes into play and will cover the sums claimed.
Does my home insurance cover damage to my property caused by my pet?
You must have an “all risks” insurance policy to cover breakage and damage caused by your cat or dog to your own furniture, carpets or belongings. For high-value assets, insurers impose a reimbursement limit that varies from one policy to another. Double-check your policy to know exactly what you’re covered for.
However, bear in mind that there is always a deductible to pay. This is stipulated in your home insurance contract. Has your dog chewed up part of your living room carpet and your deductible is set at $500? Then it’s probably not worth it, financially speaking, to file a claim.
Is there any type of damage that may not be covered by my home insurance?
Each insurer has specific conditions, exclusions and limitations to its coverage. This strongly impacts the way pet-related claims are handled. Read your home insurance policy carefully and contact your insurer if you have any questions about your coverage.
Important: you must declare the presence of your pet to your home insurer, whether you own or rent. Having a pet in the home can represent an additional risk. The insurer factors this in when calculating your premium. Did you forget to disclose that you have a pet? You may be in for a nasty surprise when it comes time to file a pet-related claim.
Are there certain animals that are excluded from my home insurance coverage?
Some breeds of dog, considered more likely to cause injury to others, are excluded by many insurers. If you own such a dog, do not be surprised if the insurers or brokers contacted are unwilling to even provide you with a quote for your property. After all, liability coverage is an integral part of your home insurance contract.
Informing your insurer of your dog’s breed is essential. Don’t try to conceal it, or you could run into problems in the event of a claim. Having trouble getting insurance because of your pet? Ask a broker for assistance, who will shore around for insurers specializing in this type of risk.
You can also contact the Insurance Information Centre, created jointly by the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Groupement des assureurs automobiles. Specialists will guide you through the process at no charge.
Please note that damage caused by vermin, insects, birds, rodents, raccoons, and bats is not covered by home insurance, unlike damage caused by pets such as cats or dogs.
Does my home insurance cover my pet’s medical care?
Home insurance does not cover medical care for your cat or dog. To secure insurance coverage for your pet, you should instead seek out pet insurance.
How can I file an insurance claim for damage caused by a pet?
First, you must inform your insurer of any property damage or bodily injury caused by your pet. Provide the claims adjuster assigned to you with all the information requested.
Proof of damage may be required. Be sure to take photos or videos documenting the breakage or injury. Send them along with any other documents required by your insurer (appraisals, repair bills, etc.).
Your insurer will inform you of the further steps to be taken, including the time required to process the claim. Follow their instructions and reply as soon as possible to any requests for further information.
How to prevent damage caused by my pet?
The behaviour of any animal, whether it’s a cat or a dog, can be unpredictable. Here are a few tips to help you avoid potential mishaps.
- Socialization: Accustom your pet to interacting appropriately with other animals and with people.
- Safe environment: Keep your pet on a leash and fence off your property. Use a cage when leaving the house.
- Proper exercise: Always make sure your pet gets enough exercise. Boredom and excessive energy can lead to destructive behaviours.
- Stimulation: Treat your pet to interactive toys or activities that stimulate their mind. This will help to channel their energy.
- Educating visitors: Instruct your guests, especially children, about the rules to follow when interacting with your pet. Explain to them the behaviours to adopt and the limits to respect to avert stressful or dangerous situations.
- Professional counselling: Should you encounter difficulties with your cat or dog, feel free to call on specialists in animal education and behaviour. They can provide specific advice and help you solve your problems. Some pet insurance plans include alternative and behavioural therapies. Ask around!
