Looking forward to hitting the road in your RV this summer? Our guide has everything you need to know, from taking your RV out of storage to predeparture checks!

Out of storage and on the road in 10 steps

1. Air out and clean the interior to remove odours and dust.

2. Inspect the walls, ceilings, and windows for leaks.

  • Reseal joints, if necessary.
  • Call a pro if you notice moisture in the walls.

3. If you suspect rodents have gotten in:

  • Use urethane foam to block all holes under the RV except the battery vent.
  • Disinfect the interior. Make sure to use gloves. Rodent urine is bad for your health.

4. Connect the potable water system (cold and hot) and slowly turn on the faucets (shower, bathroom, and kitchen).

  • Check for leaks.
  • Flush the toilets until the water runs clear to remove all antifreeze from the pipes.

5. Clean all propane connections with an air compressor or pressurized tank to remove harmful particles.

6. Make sure the propane tank is properly filled and check the date. It must be less than 10 years old.

  • Connect it and use soapy water to check all hoses for leaks. If everything is OK, start by turning on one of the burners. When the power is up and running, turn on the refrigerator, heating system, and water heater.
  • Pay attention: If you smell sulphur, you may have a leak!

7. Test the smoke, propane, and carbon monoxide detectors and check their expiry dates. Change the batteries if they’re low. Don’t forget to test your extinguishers.

8. Fully charge and connect your 12-volt battery, being careful not to mix up the wires.

9. Check your tires, indicator lights, headlights, and hazard lights. Activate the manual, electric, or hydraulic cylinder to make sure it’s working properly. Check the oil level if you have an electric or hydraulic cylinder.

10. Thoroughly examine the exterior, including the siding, roof, air conditioning system, vents and skylights, joints, bumpers, antennas, and electrical outlets. Inspect the assembly screws. They should be properly sealed to avoid leaks.

If you want to save time without sacrificing peace of mind, have your RV professionally inspected at the dealership or a specialized garage. And don’t forget to let your insurance company know when you take it out of storage. If you’re insured with CAA-Quebec, just use our handy online form.

Predeparture inspection

Got your destination picked and your campsite booked? Or maybe you’re just going to hit the open road and figure it out as you go.

Either way, don’t forget to:

  • Check the tire pressure and inspect your tires (e.g., nails in the treads).
  • Check the turn signals and tail, brake, and headlights.
  • Check the wipers.
  • Check the oil and fluid levels (windshield washer, engine, antifreeze, steering, and brake). Refer to your vehicle’s service manual, if necessary.
  • Make sure no cables or exhaust components are hanging loose underneath the vehicle.
  • Make sure the fuel tank is full.
  • Make sure you have all necessary camping equipment (dishes, utensils, folding chairs, etc.) and an emergency kit.
  • Make sure any bikes are nice and secure on the rack, which must be properly attached to the RV.

Dishes are important, but make extra sure you have your driver’s licence, proof of insurance and registration, and a joint report form!

Don’t sleep on insurance

Civil liability insurance is mandatory for RVs. The minimum under Quebec law is $50,000. But it’s a good idea to get more if you’re travelling outside Quebec, especially in the United States. And don’t forget to insure all your belongings inside the RV too. And last but not least, remember to purchase travel insurance if you’re headed outside the province!

Good to know

If you run into problems on the road, you’ll be glad to have Roadside Assistance specially designed for your vehicle. CAA-Quebec members can add the RV option to their CAA Plus and CAA Premier memberships. It’s something to consider!

DIY RV renos

Want to upgrade or personalize your RV? Here are some DIY improvements:

  • Switch to sustainable LED lightbulbs.
  • Add solar panels on the roof.
  • Install a backup camera.
  • Install lightweight, water-resistant flooring.
  • Replace the cabinet handles or countertop.
  • Put wallpaper or peel and stick tiles on the walls or cabinets.
  • Prime interior walls with an oil-based primer, then apply washable paint.
  • Reupholster the seats or use slipcovers.

Fully equipped!

You’re not ready for summer until you have all the right RV accessories. Weight and finish are important considerations when shopping around. Look for equipment that’s lightweight, compact, and robust. The CAA‑Quebec Boutique has a whole collection of RV essentials.
