Your transportation needs change when you retire. Since you’re not commuting anymore, maybe it’s time to think about selling your car or replacing it with something that’s a better fit for your new lifestyle. We run through your options and tell you what you need to know to stay on the go for years to come.

Say goodbye to your car

Once you decide to get rid of your car, you have options.

If your vehicle is nearing the end of its life, consider donating it to the Kidney Car program, which collects tired cars to help fund the Kidney Foundation of Canada. They’ll tow your car away at no cost to you, and you’ll get a receipt for your donation. It’s easy, good for the environment, and for a good cause! First check whether you need to officially discard your vehicle.

Does your car have plenty of life left in it? Read our tips for selling your car privately. Mobility Advisory Services can also walk you through how it works and help you find the list price for your vehicle—critical information when it comes to deciding on a selling price.

Make the trade

Is it time for a smaller car, or do you need to go big for those trips to the cottage or to pull your new trailer? Read the Buying or leasing my car guide for everything you need to know, step by step: buying or leasing, new or used, financing, pre-purchase inspections (go to a CAA-Quebec Approved Auto Repair Service location), and more.

CAA-Quebec road tests are also very helpful when it’s time to shop for a new vehicle. You’ll find hundreds of road tests conducted by experts as well as consumer reviews.

Maybe an electric car?

Wondering whether an electric car is right for you? Prices for electric vehicles are trending down, and more and more models (including pickups and SUVs) are hitting the market. See our five questions to ask yourself before buying your first electric vehicle. And learn more about how long EV batteries last.

Get an ATV, snowmobile, motorcycle, or scooter

Do you long to hit the snowmobile trails and explore Quebec? Take it from us: Rent before you buy to make sure you really love it, and read our 7 tips for enjoying snowmobile season.

Is an ATV more your thing because you can use it year round? That’s a great option. Whenever you hop on your ATV to enjoy the great outdoors, make sure you have the right paperwork: registration and proof of insurance.

As summer approaches and your motorcycle or scooter beckons, make sure you have the right coverage, especially if you plan to ride it out of province.

Did you know?

CAA-Quebec provides roadside assistance for members who are snowmobilers, ATVers, or motorcyclists if they experience extreme fatigue or mechanical issues or are unfit to operate their machine.

Buy or rent an RV

Have you always loved camping? Now that you’re retired, you finally have the time to plan longer trips. Read Your guide to RVs to learn more!

Driving in retirement

Driving is a demanding activity. Elderly drivers have to deal with the effects of aging. Certain cognitive or sensory functions required for good driving deteriorate or become weaker as we age.

Would you like to know if you’re still fit to drive? How to be a better driver or when to hang up your keys? The CAA-Quebec Foundation offers tips, recommendations, resources, and advice in the There’s No Age Limit for Safe Driving guide. Find out everything there is to know about driving assistance tools. They’re a big help, but they aren’t infallible.

Do you need to take a refresher course or practice certain manoeuvres that you find stressful? CAA-Quebec Driving Schools offer driving courses for seniors.

Find out other ways to get around

If deciding to sell your car means you won’t have a vehicle anymore, be sure to find new ways to get around, like carpooling, cycling, mass transit, etc. It’s important to stay mobile, and cars are not the only way to get out and about!
