Organizing training for School Safety Patrollers

Here are a few tips to make sure your training goes smoothly:

  • Keep training duration short (about 60 minutes), ideally during school hours. Students will be more receptive that way.
  • If your school has more than one type of patrol, plan to hold multiple training sessions.
  • Before the session, assign watch posts to the patrollers, and set their schedules if possible. That way the students can get a feel for how things work first.
  • Be enthusiastic in telling them how much you care about safety and how proud you are of your School Safety Patrol.

Here’s what you should cover in the training

  • The School Safety Patrol rules and patroller pledge.
  • The different types of patrols at the school and the responsibilities of the patrollers on each type of patrol.
  • Wearing and taking care of the safety patroller belt.

A great motivational kick-off is to have a short ceremony to swear your students in as patrollers. It doesn’t have to be a big event—it’s a symbolic gesture.
