Training School Safety Patrollers
For children’s safety
Organizing training for School Safety Patrollers
Here are a few tips to make sure your training goes smoothly:
- Keep training duration short (about 60 minutes), ideally during school hours. Students will be more receptive that way.
- If your school has more than one type of patrol, plan to hold multiple training sessions.
- Before the session, assign watch posts to the patrollers, and set their schedules if possible. That way the students can get a feel for how things work first.
- Be enthusiastic in telling them how much you care about safety and how proud you are of your School Safety Patrol.

Here’s what you should cover in the training:
- The School Safety Patrol rules and patroller pledge.
- The different types of patrols at the school and the responsibilities of the patrollers on each type of patrol.
- Wearing and taking care of the safety patroller belt.

A great motivational kick-off is to have a short ceremony to swear your students in as patrollers. It doesn’t have to be a big event—it’s a symbolic gesture.
