Traveling by car in the United States requires some precautions, whether it's a short excursion or a long stay.

Pre-Trip Checks

Before leaving Quebec, make sure all your documents are in order and your vehicle is ready for the journey. Also, ensure that your auto insurance policy provides adequate coverage for your trip in the United States.

In Case of an Accident in the United States

If you're involved in a road accident in the United States, take notes on the circumstances of the accident and gather necessary information, such as the complete contact details of the other driver. If possible, photograph their driver's license and insurance papers. If witnesses are present, also obtain their contact information. Call your insurer promptly to report the incident.

Coverage for Vehicle Damage

Your auto insurance covers you elsewhere in Canada and the United States just as it does in Quebec, depending on the protections and options you've chosen. If you've opted for Chapter B, which covers damage to your vehicle, your insurer will pay for it. Additional protections are available, such as FAQ amendment no.20, which offers additional compensation for accident-related expenses (hotel room rental, taxi fares, etc.).

If you rent a vehicle or borrow someone else's car, ensure that the liability coverage is sufficient. Your auto insurance policy should also include FAQ amendment no.27, which protects against damage to vehicles you don't own.

Coverage for Personal Injury

In case of injury in an accident, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) will compensate you regardless of where the accident occurs. However, passengers in other vehicles involved are not covered by the SAAQ.

Liability Insurance: A Must-Have

Liability insurance is essential for trips to the United States. A simple broken arm in an accident can lead to a costly lawsuit. Pay particular attention to the portion of your auto insurance policy reserved for liability coverage, as it will cover any bodily and/or material damage you may cause to others.

In Quebec, the law requires car owners to have liability insurance of at least $50,000. However, this amount may quickly prove insufficient if you're sued. That's why CAA-Québec recommends liability insurance of $2 million as soon as you leave the province.
