Advice for painting or staining a deck

(Text appearing on a series of blue backgrounds and video clips, such as a cloudy sky, a man cleaning his wooden deck, a woman sandblasting, paint containers.)

Step 1: Check the weather

Avoid painting or staining when the sun is shining directly on your deck.

Wait for a day when it’s cloudy or overcast.

Step 2: Prepare the surface

Remove any sand and little rocks.

Repair imperfections and fill cracks with a recommended product.

Use a sander to smooth any rough spots, applying light pressure in a continuous motion.

Step 3: Get the right tools

Use a natural silk paintbrush for oil-based products and a synthetic (nylon) fibre brush for acrylic products.

You can also use a roller.

Keep a damp cloth handy to wipe up any splatter.

Step 4: Use the right technique

Apply the stain or paint in the direction of the grain and cover the entire board at once to avoid unsightly brush strokes. Don’t forget the ends!

Use cans from the same batch to avoid any variations in colour.

The faster you work, the more even the result will be.
